I think children are perfectly capable of understanding complex topics like slavery and racism, especially if you explain it in age-appropriate terms. Like sure an 8 year old isn’t going to be able to fully grasp the horrors of chattel slavery but they absolutely can understand that there was a time in American history where white people forced black people work without pay and conceptualize the arbitrariness of racism, especially if they have a mixed race friend group.
I think it’s actually the parents that are uncomfortable trying to approach difficult topics with their kids and that’s why you have so many up in arms about critical race theory in schools because they’re too chicken shit to talk to their own children.
…I have been painting (and scratchboarding) every single day…but my ability to remember to post on socials is almost non-existent. These little birds bring such joy! So delicate and sweet and fleeting, with the most beautiful of voice!
